History

From Inspection of the history book of 1600 BC reveals that –During reign ( 1510- 1584 BC) of  first chouhal descendant of Sambalpur kingdom Blaram Dev had attacked Suruguja kingdom (Modern surguja of Chhatisgarh)  to spread his territory.

He first captured his friendship kingdom Gangapur (Sundargarh of Moden Odisha) Consequently .Thereafter, King Balarama Deva headed towards west of the kingdom with his army corps for the expansion of  territory in 1514. King Lalit Singh of Surguja  came to know that his kingdom would be attacked by Balaram dev. That is why, he reached to Bhagoragarh fort which was located at south direction of his state  to attack Balaram Dev. As a result ,A strong fight started on both sides. Many army corps of Surguja state, commander and guard and employees of Bhagoragarh had been died in this war.

There is no evidence to prove, who constructed  and ruled in  Bhogaragarh fort. Despite this, it is heard from  people that in this fort Surguja state's general, Army Crops and employees lived with their families. In the entrance gate of Bhagoragarh fort,  sambar(deer) horns were set up in such a way that two horns collided with each other and producing sound when any enemy enter the fort. Through this, the people living in the fort were getting information about arrival of the enemy . They would go towards  Bheden river from secret cave before the fort's doors opened .

The army corps of the Sambalpur king had  authorized fort after the Surguja king's army corps were being defeated. At that time , there were no army personnes or employees of Surguja State in the fort. Only wives of Fort's  Saver and Senapati (Commando) were there. Later, the army of the Sambalpur king started breaking the doors of Bhagoragarh fort to enter inside. But, before the enemy entered ; wives of the army living in the fort had come out to river from cave located behind the fort. All of them had suicide in the river. The place where they were Suicide, known  in the name "Sati Daraha".Not only this,   the armies of both kings  fought and made  area Red colour with their blood, Local people  call this area  "Rakat  Jharia darah".Finally the king of Surguja state came to know that he was going to lose this war. Hence, he returned to  his capital. During the War his presiding God "Vishnu" had been looted and brought to Sambalpur . In 1928, King Balaram Dev established a new temple and installed idol of "Bishnu" in the temple. The "Antarsajya Temple" located in Sambalpur is the proof of this war.

However, the Army Corps of Sambalpur state had captured Bhogargarh fort. But, they destroyed fort in anger of not killing anyone. After this historic Bhagoragad war, the area of Sambalpur had expanded towards north west side up to the Jharsuguda. In absence of king  abandoned Bhagoragarh fort completely demolished.
The fort which was on the banks of the river has devastated and known as Baadmal in local people. There was a village named Bhogorpali far away from  Bhogoragarh where people have got weapons and  jewelries  from broken fort. Horns of sambhar deer were installed in the entrance of the historical Bhagoragarh fort. so ,people called it "Samar Singha Gaad".In the later period of the war, the commander and staff moved few kilometer away from bhagoragarh, building a new village is  known as "Sambhar Singha Gaad" and  started living in the village. The present name of that village is ‘Samasingha'.

Goddess Bhubaneshwari was being worshiped in a small temple located on north direction of the ancient Bhagoragarh fort.  Bhagoragarh fort was completely destroyed due to floods and natural disasters. During the reign of Jayant Singh (1782-1818) of Sambalpur, Statue of goddess Bhubaneswari had been shifted from broken temple to outskirts of Sansadhar Singh who was jamindar (landlord) of Kolabira. At present, statue has revered in a small temple which outside the landlord's house. The precious idol of goddess Bhubaneswari has been worshipped as a Samleswari by local people.
